Introducing the Flourish Framework: Why We Do It This Way

By Cyndi Collen, LCSW-S, CIMHP, CKYT

I didn’t create Flourish because I wanted a our therapy clients to do worksheets, read psychoeducational books and be referred for psychiatric medication.  I created it because I was the patient for whom “standard care” wasn’t enough.

After surviving 9/11, my body became a battlefield of inflammation and PTSD and was prescribed a cocktail of medications that took my vitality away.   When I was told my condition qualified for disability, I knew I had to find a different path. I didn’t just want to “cope”; I wanted to resolve the emotional and physical wounds that were keeping my immune and nervous system in a state of constant overwhelm.

Today, as a board-approved clinical supervisor and integrative practitioner, I bring a deep, multi-dimensional toolkit to my clients and to other therapists as a continuing education provider. My work is informed by the polyvagal theory, attachment theory,  Internal Family Systems (IFS) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) that helped me cultivate mindfulness and rewire my own resilience.

At Flourish, we don’t just look at the brain; we look at the vagus nerve, the gut-brain axis, and the somatic story your body is telling. We move past the intensity of the “here-and-now” to heal the lifetime of dynamics underneath.

The Flourish Mental Wellness Framework

We don’t believe in “fixing” you—because you’re not broken. We believe in helping you remember who you are. The Flourish Framework is a clinical and holistic response to the gaps in traditional care. It is built around four pillars of mental wellness, with one thread running through it all: mindfulness, purpose, and presence.

1. Nervous System Regulation

Most people walk into our practice carrying an overloaded, hyper-vigilant nervous system. You might feel anxious all the time, or completely shut down—the “functional freeze” of someone who is holding it all together while fraying at the edges.

We begin here. With regulation. Using Somatic Therapy, Polyvagal Theory, and Internal Family Systems, we help you slow down enough to notice how your body is trying to protect you. We teach you how to support your nervous system instead of fighting it. This is the foundation; without a regulated body, no mental shift can truly stick.

2. Social & Relational Health

We are biologically wired for connection but trauma often turns relationships into a source of pressure or performance. Whether through individual therapy, couples work, or group sessions, we use a variety of mindfulness-based treatment models, including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Internal Family Systems and Attachment-based therapy to untangle your protective patterns. You will learn how to connect with a community and a partner without abandoning yourself in the process.

3. Environment & Lifestyle Architecture

This is the piece often ignored in traditional “talk therapy,” but it is where transformation quietly happens. We look at your daily rhythms—sleep, movement, and your relationship with technology. We aren’t interested in “optimization” or “productivity.” We are interested in peace. We help you audit your environment and, if appropriate, suggest starting with small changes to ensure your life feels like a place where healing is actually sustainable.

4. The Mind-Body-Biology Connection

There is no mental health without physical health. Having navigated the intersection of PTSD and chronic inflammation myself, I know that sometimes the “stuckness” is emotional, and sometimes it’s physiological.

We integrate Nutrition for Mental Health and functional principles to address the gut-brain axis and systemic inflammation. Our integrative team bridges the gap between therapy and biology so you’re no longer stuck in systems that only treat half of you.

The Thread: Mindfulness, Purpose & Meaning

This isn’t a bonus or an afterthought; it is the “why” that fuels the work. You can regulate your nerves and build beautiful habits, but without a sense of meaning, the spirit eventually falls flat. Drawing from my 15 years of Yoga and Mindfulness practice, we help you reconnect with the part of you that trauma couldn’t touch—the part of you that still knows your truth.

Why It Matters

What we’re doing at Flourish is more than therapy—it’s a reclaiming.

We are reclaiming mental health from the cold clinics, the endless labels, and the “disability” mindset. We are reclaiming it as something human, sacred, and deeply possible. You are not a set of symptoms to be managed. You are a whole, unique person.

Healing is not just a goal—it is your birthright.
